Vibhav Kollu Honors English III December 21, 2010 The New Deal’s Lasting Effect on Society â€Å"I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people,† President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said after winning his party’s nomination in 1932 (A New Deal for Americans). The 1930s was a time of great economic depression; in response the New Deal was FDR’s plan for America’s recovery. By 1933, when FDR took office, one in four Americans was unemployed. Furthermore, there was widespread hunger, malnutrition, overcrowding, and poor health. The New Deal was made to combat these tragic conditions and it did so through the means of welfare and government intervention. These acts dramatically improved labor conditions. A clear improvement in labor could be seen from before to after the New Deal labor reform. Americans, during the 1930s, clearly needed help. Too many were unemployed, struggling, starving, and/or homeless. One of the biggest legacies of the New Deal is that it combated unemployment with jobs in infrastructure. Many agencies and programs were set up to help increase America’s infrastructure and provide many needy people with jobs. One of those organizations was the Works Progress Administration. Incredibly, the WPA employed an average of 2.1 million people annually for a total of almost 8 million people. It had become largest New Deal program and required almost 11 billion dollars to fund it (Friedrich). The WPA was made with one goal in mind: to get people back to work so they can get money in their pockets to survive. The WPA built highways, airfields, public buildings, and did rural rehabilitation such as planting trees. In total, it had built around 110,000 public buildi ngs, 600 airports, 500,000 miles of roads, and 100,000 bridges (â€Å"New Deal†). Like the WPA, the Civilian Conservation Corps, had been created to provide jobs, but it was mainly for younger Americans. Accents Speak louder than Speech What is an accent? An accent is the way you pronounce words. Everyone has an accent. It is insoluble to speak without one. Usually we have an accent, which is roughly the same as the people we live with, because we want to fit in. That is how you learn speech by picking up the way people pronounce each letter. If a group separates into two groups, ie. If half move to Island A and the other half to Island B, and they are kept isolated for centuries, the pronunciation will be so different that you could almost say they were speaking different languages. This is what happened an interminable amount of time ago. People had no contact with people who lived far away because there were no phones, no radio, and the only travel was by foot. Another reason is that in the places that other countries invaded such as where the Vikings settled. People were influenced by the way they pronounced the vowels, and that is how the accent adapted. In Lancashire there is a theory that when people used to work in very big noisy cotton mills they had to speak in very loud, high pitched, shrilly voices to be heard and they got used to this and influenced the people around them. There used to be a negative perception of regional accents and RP was favoured, now BBC is positively discriminating in favour of regional accents. British town centres which used to be very different are becoming uniform, but what distinguishes them, are the accents and dialects. Also London is now a big influence to accents in England, because people are commuting in and out every day for work, so accents are disappearing in places such as Oxford, Surrey and Sussex. U and Non-U U stands for upper class and non-u stands for middle class. U’s used a looking glass rather than a mirror, wore spectacles rather than glasses, were richer rather than wealthy. Anyone who was not U for example people who talked about serviettes rather than napkins, would betray themselves as in a U’s view, ‘not one of us’. Toilet was actually a very smart word for Edwardians, then the servants picked it up and used it and it went out of fashion. Being marked as u or non-u is not only about your vocabulary but also about the way you pronounce things, an accent. For example butter is ‘orf’ rather than ‘off’. Also you would say that you have a very nice ‘hice’ rather than home. Today people say that a ‘gentleman’ never pushes a trolley at a supermarket but uses a basket. He never eats between meals, which are breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Received Pronunciation RP is the shortened name for Received Pronunciation. It is regionally described as the regional neutral accent. It is widely used as a reference point in dictionaries and as a model for teaching English as a foreign language. The Bee Essay THE BEE ESSAY The worker bees live a very short life. Their average life span is about six weeks. The worker bees are the sterile females of the bee population. They feed honey and pollen to the queen of the hive. The worker bees are called nurse bees when they enter into this stage. They produce a jelly called royal jelly which is high in protein. They give this royal jelly to the queen bee and she feeds it to her young ones. Then worker bees start to produce a honeycomb from the wax that they secrete. During this stage they can also fan their wings to circulate fresh air. The house bee is a young worker be about 2 weeks old bee who only works in the hive. The queen bee is the head honcho of the whole hive. The queen really doesn't do much. She sits in the hive and has the babies. The queen secretes a substance called queen factor which keeps all of the other female bees from becoming sexually mature. The queen is fed royal jelly to further her development as she becomes a grown bee. The queen's number one priority is to reproduce. Once she successfully does that, her job is pretty much done with. The queen is very special because she can do all of her mating in the air. The queen only mates once in her life, but in that one mating session she can produce as many as a million eggs a year. When the queen feels that the hive is getting crowded, she ventures off into the wilderness with a few of her worker bees to search for a new beginning (a new hive). Then, when the queen dies another queen will take her place and start the whole thing all over again. The drones are also placed on this earth for one main reason. That reason is to satisfy the queen. Drones are unfertilized eggs whose jobs consist of supplying the queen bee with the sperm when she is ready. Then the drones are either eaten by the queen or stung by the workers and evicted from their home. They live a very tragic life. The drone's structure is also kind of odd because the drone does not possess a stinger. So, they cannot really protect themselves when they need to. The queen bee releases a substance called queen factor which is a pheromone. When she releases this substance, the other bee's behavior is affected. They act as if they were under the influence. They really are because the queen factor acts as a drug in that it affects the way that their body functions. The queen also causes the bees to march in a line as if they were in a marching band. What they are doing is following the queen factor. Bees communicate by special dances that they perform for special occasions. This may seem kind of odd, but this is actually true. German biologist Karl von Frisch first discovered these special dances after 25 years of hard research. The bees do the dance according to their food source and it's position. They also involve the sun in their communicative dances. The scout would go out and find some food and then return and do a dance like motion. He would circle once to the left and then once to the right, and that is where we got the name of the round dance. Another dance was also discovered. This dance was called the waggle dance. The bee would go in a straight forward motion and waggle their little abdomens. Later, we discovered that the round dance was a dance done for food sources closest to the hive, but the waggle dance was performed for food sources closest to the sun.. They are sent together to a detention center, where Manny makes a deal with a drug lord, Frank Lopez in Florida to obtain green cards in return they have to kill a former government official Emilio Rebenga, who was shipped out by Fidel Castro because he wasn’t trusted. After they had assassinated Emilio Rebenga they received their green card and later received a drug trafficking related job from Omar Suarez, who was Frank Lopez’s number 2 men. This job went haywire which related to a death of Tony Montana’s friend Angel, but they job was over achieved by keeping the money and also attaining the cocaine that was needed to be purchased, which impressed Frank Lopez and offered Tony and Manny a job to work for him, Later, Frank sends tony and Omar to Bolivia to make a transaction of cocaine with a powerful drug lord named Alejandro Sosa. When tony goes back Frank was angry at Tony for making an unauthorized deal which jeopardizes they’re relationship and Tony starts his own operations and he also asked Frank’s Girlfriend to marry him. Tony attends a night club and see’s Elvira to discuss his proposal and frank walks up and tony insults him and frank leaves the club then tony see’s Gina dancing Manny, sympathizing with Gina, takes her home. Gina reveals her attraction to Manny, but he tells her off, fearful of Tonys wrath should he catch them together. Later at the club Frank orders hit men to kill tony but luckily he survives and the next day tony goes and visits Frank because he knew that he set the whole thing up, frank begs for his life and tony kills him. Tony takes over Franks Empire and marries Elvira and becomes ridiculously wealthy and also him and Elvira become addicted to cocaine causing them to drift apart and tony starts being paranoid about everything. Tony makes his way they’re and he see’s Gina and Manny together and out of rage he kills Manny before letting them tell tony that they got married 2 days earlier and they were going to surprise him and then Tony takes the widowed Gina back to his house and there Tony is snorting large amounts of cocaine and then Sosa’s men surround him and kill him. The first theme I will be talking about is Poverty and violence. Poverty is defined a state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions, Poverty is said to exist when people lack the means to satisfy their basic needs. Violence is defined a behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something. The culture of poverty constitutes a design for living that is passed on from generation to the next. Individuals feel marginalized, helpless, inferior, and adopt and attitude of living for the present. They are fatalistic. Families are characterized by high divorce rates, with mothers and children abandoned; they become matrifocal families headed by women. People adopting this culture of poverty do not participate in community life or join political parties. When children are growing up in a low-income environment and where there is a lot of street crime, which tends to influence them that street crime is socially accepted in their environment. Also, education in some neighborhoods is very terrible and teachers fear for there lives by being there therefore children don’t get the education they need, which makes them take a easy way out to a live of crime because Its more appealing to them. Don’t get me wrong they’re are few who get away from this, for example my mom and her sisters moved to America at the age of 15 without a father, and they could not afford to live in a good neighborhood but they kept there head up and got through it well and decided not to go into the life of crime. Relating this to Scarface, Tony Montana was from Cuba, which was under a communist rule he was told how to think, what to eat, and also mostly everyone had lived in poverty. When he came to America he had a job a dishwasher boy at a restaurant in a low-income area, he could have fought through it and get an education but he got opportunity for making drug deals and he took that because the money, drugs, and power was very appealing to him. The second theme is Power and struggle. Power is defined the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events. Struggle is defined strive to achieve or attain something in the face of difficulty or resistance. Max weber’s idea of social class, weber defines power as the ability of a actor to realize his or her will in a social action, even against the will of other actors. Power relates to the ability to command resources in a particular domain. Economic power then is the ability to control material resources to direct production, to monopolize accumulation, to dictate consumption. In the Scarface, Tony Montana wanted to monopolize the cocaine industry; he wanted to command his own gang army to become one of the biggest gangster that anyone has ever seen. Tony Montana wanted the world, which was the money, the drugs, and the women and finally the power. He took it too far and started distrusting his friends, getting into arguments with his wife, which caused her to leave him, he ended up killing his best friend without understanding the situation. Basically he was taking his life to ruins because he had too much power that he could not handle which had caused his death. The third theme is the theories of deviance, deviance is any behavior that violates social norms, and is usually of sufficient severity to warrant disapproval from the majority of society. Every individual has there own way of making a living to him or her it might be a great profession but in the eyes of society it might violate a social norm. In society individuals who are considered deviant are they ones who participate in activities relating to alcoholism, excessive gambling, stealing, lying, etc. he anomie theory refers to the confusion that arises when social norms conflict or don’t even exist. Everyone desires having tremendous amounts of wealth, but not everyone can be wealthy so few; individuals use deviant behaviors in order to achieve their goals. In Scarface, Tony Montana wanted everything but he achieved it by using deviant behavior, he was selling cocaine, which is an illegal substance in the United States. He wanted power so bad he decided to do it the wrong way . In conclusion, Poverty and violence, power and struggle, and theories of deviance are related to tony Montana, or Scarface. Its also related to society, poverty and violence occurs in bad neighborhoods but the individuals in those neighborhoods have big dreams like everyone else but not everyone could achieve the same so they tend to become deviants in order to try to accomplish there goals and if they end up receiving more than they have they have a tendency of losing there ground and end up making the wrong decisions.

Infertility affects more than 7 million people in the United States, and about 12 percent of women of childbearing age are considered infertile. Most infertility cases are treated with drug or hormone therapies or surgery. However, about 3 percent of cases require more advanced techniques, such as surrogacy. A surrogate is a woman who carries a child for an individual or a couple. Stories of surrogacy reach back to the Bible with the story of Abraham, his wife, Sarah, and her handmaiden, Hagar. In this story, Sarah finds she is unable to conceive and arranges for Abraham to impregnate Hagar, who goes on to conceive Ishmael. There are two types of surrogacy options, one is traditional surrogacy and the other is gestational surrogacy. A traditional surrogate is a woman who donates her own egg and then carries the pregnancy. The surrogate’s egg is fertilized through artificial insemination with the sperm of the father or a sperm donor. Traditional surrogates are genetically related to the child because their own eggs are used in the process. A gestational surrogate or also known as a gestational carrier, are not biologically or genetically related to the child she carries. Gestational carriers become pregnant through the process of in vitro fertilization, where an embryo or embryos created from the eggs and sperm of the intended parents. Donor eggs and donor sperm are selected by the intended parents are implanted in the uterus for the gestational period of 40 weeks. Intended parents and surrogates have to consider what type of surrogacy arrangement they feel like they are comfortable with. There are two common types of arrangements pertaining to surrogacy, which are commercial and altruistic. In commercial surrogacy the surrogate is paid for her time and effort, any travel involved and related medical expenses not covered by insurance. The chosen surrogate and the intended parents usually don’t know each other before the arrangement. In altruistic surrogacy arrangements, the carrier sees no financial gain, and the arrangements are commonly made with relatives or friends of the intended parents. Surrogacy is against the Church’s teaching, they teach that techniques that entail the dissociation of husband and wife, by the intrusion of a person other than the couple (donation of sperm or ovum, surrogate uterus), are gravely immoral. These techniques (heterologous artificial insemination and fertilization) infringe the child’s right to be born of a father and mother known to him and bound to each other by marriage. They betray the spouses’ â€Å"right to become a father and a mother only through each other (Catechism). † The use of a surrogate mother is a process that is thousands of years old. This is proven in the writings of the Bible in the story of Abraham and his wife Sarah, she was infertile. At this time in the earth’s history, a woman who was childless was often at times shamed by her family and friends. These women would offer their servants to act as a surrogate. The Bible does not specifically forbid the process of surrogacy. The question that you must ask is, whether it is considered to be moral or ethical with keeping children conceived out of love, born from a married couple. The Bible has also been interpreted as stating that children are a gift, not a right. Therefore, God will bless some people with children and others not. Personally I believe surrogacy is an â€Å"okay† practice. Surrogacy ultimately brings joy to the couple and why would god not want us to seek happiness. Surrogacy may seem to be defying God’s will but I think it’s a way of making a precious life out of a bad situation. Being told you will not be able to have your own children is a heart breaking situation. You would never know how it felt until you experience yourself. What gives us the right to judge someone else for wanting a child from their own DNA. If Surrogacy can use one embryo and not kill of the others I think it should be allowed in the church.
